A Heavenly Scented Seollal Gift from My Family
Seollal (설날), or Lunar New Year, is just around the corner. In Korea, this is more than just a holiday; it’s a season of gratitude and connection. We have a long-standing tradition of sharing heartfelt gifts with our loved ones to wish them a healthy and prosperous year ahead. This year, Seollal falls on February 17th, 2026, and you can already feel the festive spirit in the crisp winter air.
Today, my brother-in-law surprised me with a beautifully wrapped box. Inside was a treasure of the season—Cheonhyehyang (천혜향).

If you’re visiting Korea during the winter, you’ll notice a variety of citrus fruits, but Cheonhyehyang is truly the “Queen” of them all. Grown primarily on the volcanic soil of Jeju Island, its name literally translates to “a fragrance that reaches the heavens.” It’s a premium hybrid, a mix of an orange and a tangerine. What makes it stand out is its incredibly thin skin—so thin that it almost feels like peeling a sheet of paper—and a juice content that is much higher and sweeter than your average citrus.

I decided to have one as a snack while writing this. The moment I broke the skin, a bright, zesty aroma instantly filled my small room, chasing away the winter chill. The first bite was an explosion of flavor—intensely sweet with just a tiny hint of refreshing tanginess. It is the kind of sweetness that makes you close your eyes for a moment to fully enjoy it.
But the best part is the “lingering scent.” Because the skin is so fragrant, the sweet smell stays on your fingertips for hours after you’ve finished peeling it. It’s like wearing a natural, citrusy perfume. Every time I moved my hands near my face, I could catch a whiff of that heavenly scent, making my whole afternoon feel incredibly special and calm.
Receiving this gift reminded me of why I love Seollal so much. It’s not just about the food or the day off; it’s about the “Jeon (정)”—the warm affection we share. My brother-in-law’s thoughtful gesture made me feel cared for and connected to my family, which is the true heart of this holiday.
If you happen to be in Korea around mid-February, I highly recommend visiting a local market or a department store to pick up a box of these. It’s a small, sweet piece of the Korean winter that you simply shouldn’t miss.
2026 Seollal Holiday Info
The official holiday period for 2026 runs from February 16th (Mon) to February 18th (Wed). Since it connects to the preceding weekend, the holiday mood will last from February 14th to February 18th.
While major malls usually stay open, many small, local-owned shops and restaurants may close for a day or two, especially on the main day, February 17th. It’s a perfect time to explore quiet palaces or parks, but always a good idea to check the opening hours of your favorite spots in advance!
